Josham's Update

I have my single engine add-on to my Commerical rating! Now I am working on the final phase of my training at Flight Safety Academy my Instructor's rating. My written test is October 29th and then I will be doing the flying portion of the class.

I am now a Commercial Pilot! I have my multi-engine commmercial pilot's license. Now I am working on getting the single engine add-on. I hope to have this by summer's end.
Life in Florida is very interesting sometimes. I went to the beach on my birthday. Little did I know that something (maybe a spider) was lurking in the grass just waiting to hop on and bite my foot! I had an allergic reaction to whatever bit me and ended up in the emergency room... on my birthday too. Through it all I learned that God has blessed me with good friends here in Vero Beach.
I have been attending First Covenant of Vero Beach and have made many friends. I even joined the worship group and attend a small group on Tuesday evenings. It is very important to me to have a church family where I am living.
As a very special birthday gift, my parents came to visit me for a week in Vero Beach. They got to meet my church family and just hang out with me. We went to McKees Botanical Garden as well as the beach. But mostly we just spent time together. It was the highlight of my summer!
I just was notified by Flight Safety that they are closing down my little 4 bungalow apartment group. Because of the economy, they have a reduced student population, and therefore have shut down dorms and cut back on programs. So I have to either move to a smaller bungalow or find another place to live. I would like to find a more economical place to live, although it has been very convenient to live on campus. Either way I am moving. Check with me to get my updated address.

Wow, time flies by. Did you get the pun? Here is an update on what I am doing. I got my Multi-engine Instrument Rating in April. Wahoo! Then I went home to PA to visit my family. Jessie was home from Pemba, and we had a great time visiting together. We even got a chance to spend some extended time with my brother and his wife in Pittsburgh.
I returned home in the beginning of May, and have been working on my Commercial rating. Well, things don't happen as quickly as I would like. I have had to go back and practice maneuvers that I had done before since it has been a while since I did them. I am working hard at completing my rating. I hope to be ready to take my next ground school in July for my Instructor rating.

Well, a lot has happened since Dec. 8th. I took a break from my studies as I traveled back to PA to visit my family for Christmas. I spent some time at my parent's home in Middletown, and some time with my brother and sister-in-law in Pittsburgh. I had a wonderful time visiting them and also friends from Life Center in Harrisburg.
I am still working on the flight portion of my Multi-engine Instrument rating. However, since I took at least a two-week break, that meant that I also had to interupt my flying to take the Commerical pilot ground school. That meant two weeks of school and studying and taking written tests. I passed the Flight Safety written exam with a 94% and then I took the FAA written exam for my Commerical pilot's license. I passed the FAA test with a 97%.
Now it is back to flying: to finish my Instrument rating. Then I do the flight portion of my Commerical license. This will take some time.
Other good news: today I moved into a furnished apartment about 15 minutes from Flight Safety Academy. I now have a kitchen and no squirrels for roommates. I am excited to have my own place.

Today I am taking my check ride for my Multi-engine Instrument Rating. It is like a halfway check on getting my certification. Also, I am excited about visiting my parent's home in Harrisburg for the Christmas holidays. I will be there from Dec. 19th and return home to Vero Beach on January 3rd. I hope to see many of my friends during that time! I haven't seen my family since July (except Jessie, of course, who I hope to see again in April 2009). Merry Christmas to all.

I passed my flying and oral exam. I am a multi-engine pilot now! That adds a second stripe to my shoulder. Now I am working on my Multi-engine Instrument rating. I am taking classes and having flying lessons.

I fly today to get the final okay from my flight instructor to take my multi-engine exam - the flying and the oral exam. Next comes the exam. I hope to finish it this week. Then I will have 2 stripes on my shoulder. Wahoo!

I am working on passing my multi-engine oral exam and flight exam. I had my check ride for both. I didn't do as well as I had hoped to. Sometimes it seems like I am taking 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. This whole experience has been a lot harder than I thought it would be as I am learning to fly and learning to manage my own household, and establish a life here in Florida.
There are many dreams in my heart, and it is sometimes even hard to believe for them all. I have found a church family to be a part of, for which I am very grateful. However, I miss my family and friends in Harrisburg. I really need to get this rating finished and see myself making some real progress.

I just audited the Instrument Rating course since I already passed my written exam. I thought it would be good practice for me. I was encouraged to receive a 99% on the final exam for the course. Now I'm back to flying for my multi-engine rating. My former flying instructor has moved on to other things. I have a new flight instructor, and I start flying with him this week. It's back to my checklists again. Oh, God help!

12/28/06 Leaving Soon: the end of a good thing is not always bad
Well, our stay in America is drawing to a close. We just found and bought tickets. We leave on January 9th so we have a little time left. We had hoped to leave on December 18th or the 19th but God had other plans. Our parents were happy we were staying longer.
Joe and Shara’s wedding went very well. I was the best man and I was there to serve my brother as he got ready to drastically change his life. Not being married, I don’t know what it was like, but I know it helped having me there. I am glad I was able to travel almost halfway around the world to witness the wedding. I also enjoyed seeing a lot of people that I would not have seen otherwise.
Jessie and I have been quite busy the last two weeks. I didn’t know it, but when I visited my dentist he found a small cavity. That is my first. I used to take for granted that I could visit the dentist any time. I am not sure, but I think there is a dentist in Pemba, somewhere. Jessie and I have been trying to do a year’s worth of everything, because we plan on visiting the U.S. in about a year. It isn’t easy to think that far ahead, and if we forget something we will just have to make do.
Jess and I have been so blessed during this visit. We were given about 5,000 dollars. With that we bought tickets home to Mozambique, and have some left over to live on. The biggest expense we have is travel, which can cost up to $2700 a person for a round trip ticket. In November, when we first got to our parents place, Jessie had a package waiting for her from a person who met her while visiting Iris. The surprise was a brand new computer. I was just surprised with one too! I just stared at it in amazement. It took a while for me to understand that itwasn’t a joke!
There is a part of me that doesn’t want to leave. In spite of this, I have a strong desire to go to where my home is. In a place full of witchcraft, theft, begging, poverty, spiritual hunger, miracles, friends and much more. God has my destiny and Mozambique is part of it. I was trying to describe what it was like to a friend. I am drawn to Pemba, Mozambique. That is where I feel fulfilled, where I am supposed to be. It is hard to describe, but I grow as a person and I am satisfied as I serve Iris Ministries and The Makua people. So, I return there, and that is where my story continues.
